Several people were killed on Sunday, April 17, 2022, as Nigerian soldiers were said to have opened fire on residents at Orlu Local Government Area (LGA) of Imo State, Southeast Nigeria, withnesses told DSG RADIO.
Information got to DSG RADIO that soldiers stormed various communities in the local government in pick-up trucks shortly after nightfall and started shooting occasionally as they searched for suspected indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB) agitators causing disorder in the state.
A source whose neighbour was shot dead by the soldiers said atleast four people had been killed in what appears to be a gross violation of fundamental human rights.
According to the source, “Four people have been killed by the soldiers. They are looking for IPOB members but killing innocent citizens,” he said, pleading confidentiality for fear of being attacked.
Imo state police spokesman, Micheal Abattam confirmed the incident and but said he’s not authorised to speak on what transpired because the incident has nothing to do with the police but the military and he doesn’t work with them.
Efforts to reach the military spokesman Onyema Nwachukwu was unsuccessful as he didn’t respond to any calls and text messages relating to the incident and also the number of casualties.
